Fast Tip Wednesday: Sock Buns

, , , , ,

Let me just say, whoever came up with the idea behind the sock bun was a genius, plain and simple.

I recently went to a fancy dress Christmas cocktail party where it was so fancy that the homeowners were inspecting your attire before allowing admittance! It made the whole event feel very exclusive.

While I was at said party, I noticed how nice the hostess’s bun was. It was high on her head and looked great. I immediately asked if it was a sock bun, and it was!

That is why for today’s fast tip, I wanted to remind you all about the sock bun!

(Makeup by TiffanyD on Youtube)

Now honestly, this really is easy. I only had to attempt it twice to get a a good bun, and that I saying a lot because I am not good with hair! I have a lot of layers in my hair, so I will say you may need some extra bobbie pins. My other tip it this: if you don’t have a sock you are willing to cut up, go buy leg warmers! You can buy the children’s ones or adult. I bought a pair in black to match my hair!

If you don’t know what I am talking about, here is a picture:

I purchased mine at a local Dollar Store, there is no need to spend a lot of money on them!

Try this out as a new go to for hairstyling. I promise you will all love it!

Holiday Season Fashion Guide

, , , , , , , , , , , , ,

As promised, we are bringing you our must have fashion guide for all your holiday festivities!

There has been some bickering amongst ourselves about what we truly felt deserved to make this list, so what we did was look at some of our top sellers to help us decide what you may like.

We have the Stop Staring! Fortune Dress at the top of our list! When we first saw this dress at Magic we were unsure about it. We loved how it looked on the model but didn’t know how it was translate into real life. Well let me just tell you, it is a 10!

This dress is a killer because of how it fits to the body, and the material is lightweight and breaths easy. No need to worry about sweating through this dress while you dance your way to midnight! The other fabulous thing is that this dress is both a mix of gold and silver. It is a true champagne. We loved that about the dress because it means we can wear whatever type of metal we want. (I’m sure many of you know that silver and gold doesn’t necessarily go with EVERYTHING).

Another one of our favorites that our fans have loved is the Stop Staring Timeless in Green.

This dress is really for any woman! I do not think we have seen it on someone and thought “No, doesn’t look good.” It is great because it is flattering from a size 0 to 16. Proof of this can be seen just if you Google the images for it! There are women of many sizes wearing this and rocking it!

The other thing that we love about this dress is the color of green that it is. It is oftentimes hard to find a green that is “true,” but this is a solid green. Not mossy, not khaki, this is green. It pops on any skin tone.

Up next we have the Heartbreaker Haute Milan Dress in Red. I have ALWAYS been a fan of Heartbreaker. I love the materials they use to construct their dresses. The dresses are sure to last and they don’t fade if you care for them properly.

The Haute line from Heartbreak is a favorite because it offers styles and materials that are just a notch above their already excellent standards. They really are creating a well crafted product. This dress has a full swing skirt with the v-neckline. The neckline is wonderful for those women who want to show off a little bit of cleavage without giving the whole party a show.

For some extra va-va-voom add a petty coat for a more full skirt. I personally plan on wearing this dress out for a Christmas Eve celebration.

One of our last picks for the holiday season is the Stop Staring! Jasmin Pink Lace dress!

This is another dress that took us by surprise! When we first got it in we were wondering how it would look on the everyday woman, but again, Stop Staring has proven to us just how well constructed and thought out their clothes are.

This dress is just like the Jasmin’s that have come before it in the cut, but everything else is just slightly different. The first thing is the material. The material on this dress is not real lace, the lace is just a print on the material. The lack of actual lace is great because it means that there will be no snagging on jewelry or other sharp edges that stick out. The other thing about the material is that is slightly stiffer than the normal 4 way stretch that Stop Staring! uses. This can be both a good and bad thing. We personally like it because it makes the dress feel more supportive, it holds you in where you need to be. The only bad thing is that you may need to go up a size, so don’t worry or feel ashamed if you do.

All right dolls, that is our wrap up of our favorite holiday looks! As always, email us, comment here, post to Facebook and let us know what looks you will be wearing this holiday season. Is it one of the dresses we mentioned above or have you gone a different route? Maybe a little more Rockabilly than retro? We would love to hear from all of you!

Warmest Wishes During the Holidays!

Fast Tip Wednesday: Dry Your Nails in a Moment

, , , ,

All right Dolls, it is time for another Fast Tip Wednesday, our new favorite topic to post about!

We have been starting to dash off to parties, and with each new look we wear, we want to change out our polish to match our looks!

Not sure about all of you, but sometimes we don’t have the time to spend waiting for our polish to dry. We have spent some time scouring the internet looking for the best tutorials to help us figure out how to make our polish dry quickly.

While the use of Pam spray or olive oil does help, this is the method we prefer: ice water!

There were many different tutorials available, this was one of the best ones. It shows how simple it is! All you need is a bowl of ice water. From our own trial and error, we want to make it clear that you need very cold water. We suggest using your own chilled water and adding ice cubes.

In the video, they only do two fingers at a time, get a bowl large enough for all five of your fingers. Make sure not to rest them on the sides or bottom of the bowl, or else you will still smudge and dent the nail polish job you just did.

Once we have painted our nails, we allow one-two minutes for our nail polish to set and then we submerge them in the ice bath for two minutes. Once your polish is set, you are good to go for a night on the town.

Most tutorials say that it is an instant dry, I like to say quick dry. So don’t be too disappointed if your polish does not immediately dry. We like it because we can do this as the last step before we leave the house!

Try it out and let us know what you think of our fast tip this week!

Super Shopper Saturday: A Guide to Shopping for the Vintage Loving Woman

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

With the holiday season here, we know many of you are spending you Saturdays inside of malls, boutiques, and all sorts of shops looking for the perfect gifts for your loved ones. We thought we would put together a quick shopping guide to help give you an idea of the items your friends may love! And if you find something you like on the post, you can conveniently forward this to a friend or post it on your Twitter and Facebook to help give everyone a hint 😉

We tried to find gifts that should be available at most local US retailers, and of course here at JBR, to make it easier for you to find and purchase everything you may need. What is even better, is now that most companies have shopping online, you can shop it all at the click of the mouse (Hear that men? If your girlfriend or wife sent this to you, just pick an item and follow the link to buy it! No need to enter a mall!)

Now on to the fun stuff, the gifts we would love to receive!

First up is this amazing eye shadow palette from the Kat Von D line at Sephora. We would like to thank Jessica at Pin Up Persuasion for writing such an excellent review of the product, which prompted us to go out and buy some of the items for ourselves.

The eye shadow palettes come in different shades of color, but we like the Sinner set because we felt like the colors were more versatile. You can use this palette with the softer colors for the daytime when you are at work, then when you are leaving the office and ready to hit the town, all you have to do is mix in the darker shades to give yourself an instant smokey eye!

Most of the color palettes have the mix of the soft and dark colors, so if you are looking for something that will be a go-to make up kit, any of the colors will be a winner, but we think EVERYONE will love the Sinner set.

Continuing with the Kat Von D make up, you MUST HAVE her Triple Threat Tattoo Liner. Honestly, as any lover of pin up knows, you need to invest in good eyeliner. If you are not that good with creating the perfect cat-eye, these will help you to achieve that look.

The liner is easy to use and is long lasting. What we loved about this set is that it comes with three different tips to achieve three different looks. I personally like to use Poetica the most. It is the bolder chisel. Being a woman that wears glasses, I like to make sure that my liner can be seen through my frames and this definitely gets me that look.

For the woman that loves to have her nails done, I would suggest purchasing Essie nail polish from Target, specifically in Fishnet Stockings.

What I love about Essie from Target is that you are paying a little more for a nail polish, approximately $7.79, but you get a quality polish. I personally think that the quality of this polish is better than the Sephora brand polishes. My polish has not clumped; and when I put it on, it is smooth from the first coat.

I happened to buy Fishnet on a whim. I was going to a wedding wearing Stop Staring’s Ashely dress in Dove and I needed a color that would really pop against the dress. I am extremely picky about my reds. I do not like frosted colors and I try to stay away from reds with a purple undertone. I like classic red, which is hard to come by.

I was lucky when I stumbled upon Fishnet by Essie. It is a true red and it reminds me of the 1950’s. It is classic and elegant. The color makes your nails shine in a subtle way and it goes with any outfit you wear it with. The only thing I will warn you about is that you need to use a base coat before you put the color on. If you don’t, your nails will have red staining. I haven’t had stain issues the times I have used a base coat.

elfcube elfcubecloseup

Another nail polish favorite from Target is the e.l.f. Nail Polish Cube.

This cube comes in at $10! For that price, you are getting 15 mini polishes in jewel tones. We picked this as one of our favorites because it is perfect for the holiday season! There are so many chances to wear fun, bright, and sparkly colors, but you don’t want to spend a fortune on a color that you will never wear again.

The girls of JBR love to paint their own nails, and as such, we also love to switch out the polish every week. A gift like this allows us to be able to change our color as frequently as we want, without feeling the guilt over wasting money on new colors.

Let me just say, when I saw this purse at Magic in August, the first thing I said was “This purse is going to kill it for the holidays.” The Lux de Ville Mini Gambler in Champagne Sparkle is one of my favorite purses that JBR is carrying right now!

This tote is a perfect gift for a few reasons: first of all, what woman doesn’t want a new hand bag? This is a great tote to have in your closet because of the size. You can use this as a cross body purse, or as a single shoulder strap purse. The color makes it so that you can wear it with anything, and then the fact that is has a shimmer to it just drives me wild. The other thing that is great about the purse, is that Lux de Ville has changed the lining, now on the inside you have this red that pops against the champagne. With a price of just $56, it makes it one of the more affordable purse choices around!

We love scarves. They are one of the best gifts to get during the holidays, and if the right ones are purchased you will be able to wear them throughout the year.

We suggest the fashion scarves from Target as our favorites to gift. Most of the scarves, particularly from Mossimo and Merona, tend to be a light weight cotton material in great prints and colors. These scarves are the best because you can wrap them tightly around your neck in the winter to help keep warm, and then in the summer if you make a loose knot around it, you can wear it as an accent to your summer dresses. The other wonderful thing about gifting one of these scarves is that they come in at $12-15! For the price, you really can’t beat it!

These are just some of our favorite items to gift our friends during the holiday season! Let us know what you will be gifting to your loved ones, or maybe what you want for yourselves!

Next week we will be posting our favorite holiday dresses that will make you a hit at any holiday party you find yourself attending!

Kat Von D’s One Of A Kind Beauty Collection

A wonderful guide to Kat Von D make up, it made us want to rush out and buy some ourselves!

Pin Up Persuasion

There is no secret in the fact that I’ve been a HUGE Kat Von D fan over the years, her beauty and talent is truly one of a kind. When Kat released her first book, I traveled to Toronto and waited in line for over three hours just to have the chance to meet her and get my book autographed. The Sephora staff all gush on how down-to-earth she is and truly appreciates her fans which was very evident when I met her as well. Needless to say, when her makeup line was released I had to try it…not knowing I would fall in love all over again. The quality is hands down one of the best when it comes to the luscious, highly pigmented and long lasting products.

Now it’s time to share the fabulous products in my growing Kat Von D collection.

The very first item I purchased…

Women We Love: Lucille Ball

, , , , , , , ,

During October, when we were coming up with our DIY Costume ideas, we thought about some of our favorite leading ladies of the 1950’s. These ladies are icons for their fashion choices as well as their acting abilities.

While we were thinking of Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O, and Marilyn Monroe, one of my friends had me over to her house for dinner and a movie. During the course of the evening we ended up watching I Love Lucy. I have never really watched a lot of the show before, but with each passing episode there were several things I noticed.

Lucille Ball was portraying a housewife to a moderately successful Cuban singer, she was in a leading comedic role, and during each end credit it stated that she was part owner of Desilu Productions. What struck me is this, Lucille Ball is always noted for her comedic skills, but underneath her well timed slap-stick, she really was a woman to admire.

While Lucille Ball may have played the housewife on TV, she was so much more than that. She was a trail blazing woman, breaking ground for female comedians. What she did on I Love Lucy was innovative for the time. The show ran for 180 episodes. During each show she was always well dressed, known for mostly wearing swing style dresses. She often times wore dresses that had two toned collars and had a string of pearls. She was the embodiment of a 1950’s housewife in all the best ways possible.

Some of the most common costumes that are sold stating they are “Lucille Ball” outfits have some sort of polka dot print, like the picture below.

What we loved about Lucy was her pioneer spirit. She knew what she wanted and she made it happen. When the creators of the I Love Lucy show first approached Lucille Ball, they wanted another actor to play her husband. Lucy stated it would have to be Desi Arnaz or no one! She obviously got what she wanted.

Not only that, but Lucille Ball got married much later in life (later than most women of her time) at the age of 40! She had spent most of her youth acting, modeling, and doing radio. After she was married at 40, she had two kids, another feat not often heard of for a woman of her age.

When it comes to being the first woman to run a television studio, there is nothing but admiration for Lucille Ball. Oftentimes when people look back on history, especially in terms of women’s roles, they only want to look at the negative, but we here don’t think like that.

As part of our motto to start a vintage revolution, we want to look at the positive impact that the past has played on the present, and Lucille Ball is definitely a part of that movement! She was a feminist before we needed to start burning our bras. If she saw something, she went after it, and we love her for it!

Just like with Bettie Page, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, all of these great women paved the way for something more, and when we fail to see that, we fail to admit to an important part of women’s history. Just because a women may play the housewife on TV, doesn’t mean that her only role was to be domestic, Lucille Ball proves it.

We want to hear about what women from the past have made an impact on you and why! Share some of your favorite stars and what they represent to your love of vintage. How did they start a vintage revolution for you?

DIY Costume Round Up

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

All right dolls, Halloween is just 5 days away and we want to make sure you are all prepared for the big event. While many people joke that Halloween is just a chance for women to let their inner sex kitten out, we at JBR Clothing disagree! Halloween is a great reason to shop for dual outfits! There is nothing better than buying pieces for a Halloween costume that you can recycle for a different purpose after the holiday.

With this thought in mind, our resident buyer Rachel, has been putting together some costume ideas based off your favorite JBR dresses! We will give you a round up on what you might have missed!

This is of course one of the most iconic women of all time, Mrs. Jackie Kennedy Onassis! You can recreate this look with the Stop Staring! Flawless dress, pearls, pointed tow pumps, and the over sized sunglasses. If you want to take the look a little further, don’t forget a pill box hat and a large purse.

This is for those women who love Alice in Wonderland. You can turn yourself into The Queen of Hearts with Hell Bunny’s Poker Face dress! This dress is a fun twist on the Queen of Hearts, the dress has a deck of cards scattered all over. Add a crown and scepter and you are ready to make heads roll! If you want to take this dress a little further, go to your local gardening department and buy a pink flamingo to use as a croquet club.

Here we have a look inspired by one of the sexiest cartoon characters to ever hit the big screen, Jessica Rabbit. Take the Stop Staring! Gathered Ava in Red, add a pair of elbow length purple satin gloves, a flowing red wig, and some high pumps and you will be beating off the men all night!

You can also be one of our all time favorite Batman villains, Poison Ivy with the Stop Staring! Moda dress. Instead of trying to find a green unitard (totally scary on some!), swap out our dress and pin vines of ivy. Add a face mask, pumps and gloves, and take over the night. This could be cute if you have a die hard Batman fan in the family (think of pairing this with your son/husband/boyfriend) it could be a hit at any party!

I am sure most of you can guess what costume idea this is, the wonderful Breakfast at Tiffany’s Holly Golightly, played by Audrey Hepburn. This is most definitely a dress you will wear again, because what woman doesn’t need an LBD? Get this look with the Stop Staring! Love Fitted dress in Black. You will HAVE to have some great costume jewelry and a high and tight bun with a tiara. If you want to add a little more, be sure to carry a small white bag with a donut and a cup of coffee.

Our last costume idea is one of America’s biggest sweethearts, Miss Minnie Mouse! You can get this look by taking the Hell Bunny Cutie Pie dress, adding a pearl necklace and earrings, mouse ear headbands and black or yellow pumps. If you live somewhere that is going to be cold, you can layer with a black long sleeve and black tights to make the look more authentic.

We love all of these dresses on their own, but if it gives us a reason to make a purchase for Halloween it is even better! There is nothing worse than wanting to get into the holiday, but then ending up with an outfit you can never use again. I mean, how many of us really want to wear the same costume a few years in a row?

Be sure to share with us your Halloween DIY costume ideas! You can do this by tweeting us @vintagerevblog, or if you are creating a DIY costume based off a JBR dress, snap a photo and tag us on Instagram! We love being able to see how you get creative. You can tag us on Instagram @jbrclothing.

Have a safe and fun Halloween!
