Vintage Revolution: A New Year, A New Blog: Happy New Year fellow Vintage Lovers! Vintage Revolution is back for another year, bringing you more of what you love and want to read! Th…
While yesterday was the SAG Awards, and yes, we normally report on who wore what designer; we thought that today we would give you a break from the fashion round-up to talk about something else on our mind.
I know, how can we pass up a chance to discuss trends from the red carpet for brooches. The answer is easy, we are waiting for the Oscar red carpet! OK, that and we wanted to focus on jewelry and accessories that are relevant to you, our readers!
We know all you vintage lovers like to find a way to wear your favorite fashions on a daily basis and we wanted to let you in on a secret. Those old brooches you have, they are coming back in style and we want you to start wearing them!
Now, we are not talking about the ones worn by your first grade teacher (No offense to the teachers our there), but you know which ones we mean. The brooches with cats, holidays, or gold leaves.
Above are the choices we want you to steer clear of. We want you to go for large pieces, things that are going to stick out. A brooch can become your next favorite accessory piece, something that becomes a signature item, and something to make you stand out.
When looking for a brooch you want to pick something that is going to be versatile and go with as many outfits in your wardrobe as possible. We suggest looking for something with a metal base you normally wear, like gold and silver. After you have figured out your metal base pick what color you would like to accessorize with. This could be something bright like blues, reds, oranges.
The above brooch is a good pick for someone dabbling in the trend. You want something that is going to be timeless that won’t make you seem dated. Don’t think that you can only stick a brooch on your blazer, you can pin one on your dress at the neckline, as seen on Blake Lively.
Another way you can wear a brooch on your dress is on your waist. If you have a dress with a low waist you can put the brooch to the side like a side button. If you have a dress with a sash or wrap you can also add your brooch there!
A fun way to make a brooch work for you is to add it to a headband or hair ribbon. This can turn your brooch into a hair accessories that has some bling to it, a trend that has hit the red carpet for the 2012 season!
These are just a few simple ways that you use a brooch, but there are so many more to consider. You can add a brooch to your scarf to add some pzazz to your winter wear. If you enjoy wearing silk scarves in the spring you can transfer the look on to your warm weather.
If your purse needs a sprucing up you can add it to the handle of your handbag!
Let us know what kind of brooch is your favorite, how you are wearing it, or even better, send us a picture!!!
With the Golden Globes just a week ago we wanted to focus on one of the big winners, A Week With Marilyn, a biopic film about Marilyn Monroe and the time she spent filming “The Prince and the Show Girl.” Michelle Williams portrays Marilyn in the film and snagged a Best Actress in a Comdey/Music at the Golden Globes for her role.
Michelle’s portrayal of Marilyn Monroe was moving. She brought to life the iconic actress in a way most audience members have never seen her shown. One JBR staff member said, “I didn’t know all that about Marilyn [Monroe]” after seeing the film. Michelle played Monroe as vulnerable, fragile, and a true artist. While most of the public knows about the possible mental health issues she suffered, it has never been shown in a biopic movie of her life.
Thanks to this movie people are re-interested in who Marilyn Monroe was, so we thought what a better chance than sharing with our fans her influence on fashion! Most women love to cite how Monroe’s curves were glorified and found appealing during her time, when now the same figure would be lauded as being over-weight or border line obese.
Monroe started out her career as a fashion model. She began modeling after her first husband was drafted in WWII and a friend took pictures of her while working in a factory. This was the jumping off point for Monroe who signed with a model agency and a year later signed with film studio 20th Century Fox.
Many critics complained that Monroe relied too much on her sexuality to make her stardom, and while that may hold some truth, they failed to see the good in her image. Monroe’s sexuality helped to show the world that there was nothing scandalous about the female body, in fact, it was beautiful. It could be glorified, sensual, and provocative without revealing it all (while there were a few times Monroe did this she shines more with her clothes on).
Looking through the gallery of pictures for Monroe is the perfect chance to find inspiration for your own wardrobe. It was fun for us JBR girls because after talking about Monroe’s influence and brainstorming this post, we were able to go into the inventory and pull some of our top picks to re-create some of the bombshell’s looks! Don’t worry, we won’t hold out on you. Below you will find our top picks!
Each one of these dresses was a top pick by our stylists as our favorite Monroe recreations. All of the dresses can be found at JBR and are strikingly similar to what fashion icon Marilyn Monroe wore on a daily basis. These dresses were made to make the feminine form look sexy without baring it all. So take a chance and try something new. Monroe showed the world there was nothing wrong with a little curve and sensuality, she is the one who said, “The body is meant to be seen, not all covered up.” So show the world what your working in with one of our dresses!
Leave us a comment with how you embrace your curves and find inspiration in Marilyn Monroe!
Our favorite time of the year is here, AWARD SEASON!!!!!!
Like any fashionista, we look forward to award season with a passion. This is a chance for us to see what trends will dictate the dresses hanging in the shops for Spring. We want to make sure that you are prepared for what will be HOT, HOT, HOT! Read our favorite picks for Spring trends, as seen on the Golden Globes red carpet. And don’t worry too much, this is just show number one, we have at least three more award shows to cover and tell you about!
We loved the simple two-toned dresses that were worn by both Angelina Jolie and Emma Stone. Angelina Jolie wore a dress by Atelier Versace. This dress was a gorgeous number, accentuated by the bright pop of color at the neckline. Jolie pulled this together by accessorizing with a red hand bang and red lips. As Spring starts there will be more dresses playing with two-toned colors. There will be two variations of this look, contrasting and complimentary. Jolie has obviously gone for a contrasting look. In order to bring this look to your everyday wardrobe thing of it in terms of color blocks, a white blouse with a red blazer over.
Here Emma Stone is wearing a complimentary two-toned dress by Lanvin. The complimentary colors create a dynamic look that gives the dress a layered look. When you look closely it appears that the layer beneath the dark aubergine is the same tone of cranberry that is peaking through on the sides. A way to bring this to life in your own closet is by taking the shame shades of colors and layering them on top of one another. We love the idea of taking brighter, bolder colors and doing this. Going back to the idea of the red blazer, you can layer that over a crimson top, or burgundy. You want to go one shade darker or lighter. If you go two or more shades in the color gradient it could given the affect that you had no idea what you were doing when you dressed this morning.
Another trend we loved from the red carpet was the pale pastels! Charlize Theron wore a pale blush colored dress by Dior Couture. Women often shy away from wearing softer colors for fear of washing themselves out but here it looks wonderful. As with the complimentary two-toned trend, here you need to know the color gradient you are working with. For those women who have fairer skins you want to pick a pale pastel that will be either two shades paler than your skin tone, or two shades darker. Don’t be scared to wear a pale pastel, they can end up making you look fresh faced and young with the right make up and accessories.
The last trend we want to share with you are deep blues! We saw many leading ladies wear dresses of a deep blue hue, and we LOVED IT! Here we have Sophia Vergara in a deep blue mermaid style dress (also a hot item on the red carpet) by Vera Wang.
Here we have Emma Roberts, and while she didn’t walk the red carpet for the Golden Globes, she was seen at a Golden Globes after party wearing a deep blue dress by Zac Posen and we just had to include her on our list! This is one of the easiest looks to transform into you closet! This can be something as simple as a deep blue dress that you pair with a chic pair of heels. But we want you all to be prepared, that this is going to be a hot look for the Spring, so when you see a dress you love in this color buy it before the next lady does! We also like this color because it can be as sophisticated as you would like, or as playful, all dependent on how you choose to dress up your outfit.
These are just three of our top favorite picks from the Golden Globes, and trends we see taking over the cover of Vogue, In Style, and other fashion magazines. Don’t let it pass you by, try experimenting with these looks! Make sure to stop by JBR and see what dresses we have there that you can use to transform into some of these looks.
We love finding ways to bring our love of vintage into every aspect of our life and nothing says vintage likes a pineapple upside down down and an apron from Sourpuss. While the holidays are over, there are still plenty of chances to cook up a storm and use some of our newest items that JBR Clothing is carrying!
JBR recently started carrying aprons from Sourpuss, this is the Galley Ho Anchor Apron. There are three different apron options and each one is cuter than the last! These aprons come in bright colors and prints. They are a way of capturing that vintage style we love without being a hand me down from your parents. This item is just one of the many new things we have in for Spring!
If you are looking for other ways to spruce up your kitchen and bring some vintage items in another way is with taking come classic recipes and give them a new twist!
A great aunt of mine used to make the best baked goods! She was a goddess in the kitchen and wore some of the best clothes of her time! That being said, when we in the office talk about some of the most classic desserts we can think of pineapple upside down cake always comes up. We wanted to take that and give it a more contemporary twist on it, and what better way than with pineapple upside down CUPCAKES! If you are a fan of cupcakes you can even get the Sourpuss Cupcake apron to make these with! In order to make these yummy delights we used the same basic recipe as with any pineapple cake. The only difference is we put the pineapple at the bottom of each cupcake paper cup. We then use a cream cheese frosting on the top with the cherry on top!
We want to hear about how you bring your love of vintage to the kitchen! Leave us a comment and let us know how you do it! Do you have a collection of aprons? Some bunt cake pans that were handed down in your family? Or you just like to wear your best vintage outfit when you are hosting a party? Let us know!
